Thoughts For Thursday - Buying Generic

After reading Dana's TFT last week about being thrifty and myself trying to find ways to cut some costs in my life... I've come to the conclusion that there are some things that you can't go cheap on.  From food to appliances to clothing.

There isn't really much to say about why other than the fact that cheap generally equals poor quality.  Some things are fine to buy generic... others, not so much.
I'd like to try and get a list going here of things you've found you cannot go cheap on; my input:
  • Sheets
  • Knives
  • Cheese
  • Chex Mix
  • Imitation Crab Meat
  • Plastic Wrap (Saran Wrap)
  • Dish Soap
  • Mt. Dew

I'll add more as they come to me... I'm drawing a complete blank all of the sudden!
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
My TFT for you today is: What things do you refuse to buy generic and why?

Actually, you can go cheap on Mt. Dew, at least in Florida. They have Mt. Splash, which tastes identical to Dew for a fraction of the cost. I do not know if they sell that in MN though..

In addition to yours, I can't go cheap on toilet paper or paper towels. Cottonelle and Bounty all the way!!!

I agree with you on the sheets. I have always said that it is worth your money to spend and invest in bedding. I also agree about the knives. I can’t buy generic macaroni and cheese. It has to be at least Kraft. Lower brand small kitchen appliances don’t work that great either. I don’t drink pop that often but if I did, I don’t want to drink Dr. Thunder instead of Dr. Pepper. And while I was buying the cheap toilet paper for awhile, I went back to Charmin. It’s way softer! Good topic!

Cereal -- they say that stuff in the bags is just as good, but it's NOT! Toilet paper -- I want the good stuff and I'm willing to pay! Makeup -- I love my MAC and Aveda.

I will, however, go generic on prescription and over the counter meds cause I do believe its more or less the same thing. I know I go generic on other things, but can't seem to think of them at the moment...

I agree with your entire list but have to add a few... Toilet paper, paper towels, Q-Tips, most clothing (the cheap crap just doesn't last and looks dingy after just one wash), bread, cat food (only because I recently changed and my kitties LOVE the new stuff so much better) and I am sure there are more but like you I can't think. I will blame it on my eye! hehe

The only thing I can think of that I can't go cheap on is laundry detergent - I really think that certain brands do make clothes last longer and look better and that saves money. Great post!!

I won't go cheap on anything that I put on my skin. Lotion, make-up, or bodywash. I breakout pretty easy and have to take good care of my skin to keep it under control. Love the topic!
