The Big Give

Last week was a hectic one for me, but I managed to write up a little story for one of the newest blogs I'm following: The Big Give.

The concept is fricken amazing!  It's a blog that encourages random acts of kindness.. yep, sweet, huh?!

I was moved by something, Krysten, a fellow blogger, did last week, so I decided it was worth passing the story along to The Big Give; go here to read about it.

Short and sweet for me this morning... please go read the story here and consider paying it forward!

Random v.9.3

~My car - I should be getting my car back this week :) [hopefully]... they had to have a new quarter panel shipped over direct from Japan.  I miss my car; I don't even remember what it looks like, smells like, or drives like.  I think this new car is making my back sore.  I miss my damn car!

~Subway Boy! On Saturday I had my work holiday party (a month late).  Shannon has worked at Matrix several times over the past year, so she was invited to be there as well.  Towards the end of the evening (when Subway Boy got off work) he sent her a text asking if she was still at work.  Well, long story short, we [Shannon, Michelle, Steve, and I] ended up meeting him at Bennigan's for a drink.  Shannon and Charlie (Subway Boy's real name) ended up hitting it off pretty well and ended the night with a hug.  We'll see what the future holds for Shannon and Charlie :)

~Bikini - I started knitting my bikini last night, I'm actually going to do this!  I spent a good part of my Sunday afternoon (4 hours at least) reading patterns and researching yarn material.  I ended up buying Cascade Fixation, which is 98.3% cotton/1.7% elastic.  If you follow the link and scroll down a bit, I bought color #9080 (almost half way down the page).  The elastic in it will allow it to hold shape better and be more water friendly should I decided it's actually good enough to wear out!  I think I'm most likely going to have to line it with something, but we'll see when it's finished.  I'm kind of making my own pattern as I go using all the knowledge I absorbed this weekend.  The ladies at the yarn store told me I have to bring it in when I'm finished so they can see it... they were more excited about it than I am!
I'm taking pictures as I go and writing down my pattern as well... I'll post all of it on here when I'm done (not that any of you care about the pattern)!

~Charity - I know times are tough for many of you right now but I have to at least post the link in effort to help.  My friend Terri walks for MANY different Breast Cancer walks in Phoenix; she's done the 3-day twice now and walks many smaller [distance] walks throughout the year.  She needs support for an upcoming walk - please donate - any amount you can, even if it's just $5-$10... it all helps and is for a great cause.  We all have women in our lives, that hopefully won't be affected by Cancer, but it's a real possibility.  Wouldn't you like to say you were part of finding the cure?

~Facebook - I'm obsessed with Facebook!

~Google Texting - Let me explain how to text Google; first, compose your text however your phone allows you to do it and send it to 466453 [GOOGLE spelt out on most phones], you will generally get a reply within seconds.  You can do this for weather [text 'weather' or 'w' and your zip code], phone numbers [text the name of the business and the city state], definitions [text 'define' and the word you want defined], etc. Last night I shot a text to google looking for the number to the yarn shop, it returned my results as per normal and I went on my merry way.  Roughly 20 minutes later it sent another text with my same results... roughly 20 minutes later again... and it kept happening.  I text'd 'STOP' and it sent one saying Google wouldn't text me anymore unless I asked for information.... 20 minutes later it sent that same message... over and over about every 20 minutes.  I went online from my phone and found a message board with tons of people having the same issue... several hours and many texts later... it finally stopped.  I'm a huge fan of the service, but I'm questioning if I should continue to use it in the future.  Quite frustrating to say the least!

~IRA - I have a SIMPLE IRA at work... here is me finding the positive [or something like that]: Rather than looking at my quarterly statements and thinking damn, I'm loosing so much money, I'm looking at them and thinking damn, I just bought XX amount of shares for super cheap and when this economy turns around I'm going to be RICH!  Might be stupid of me, but it's better than being depressed about it!

Now, let's attempt some interaction by you, the reader.  Tell me a story.... Ready? GO!

**ADDED 10:28am** Oh joy... my hours just got cut.

Hair today... gone tomorrow.

As I stood in the bathroom here at work with my ponytail in the middle of my head, trying to measure the length of my hair alone, I came up with 18-19 inches.
Being a bit more realistic, I moved the ponytail down to the base of my neck, I came up with roughly 17", again measuring hair as long as mine alone is not an easy task.
I plan to get the official word when I have help.

I've been doing some research on donating hair.  Locks of Love was my first thought; though there are many other programs out there.  Pantene also has a program for hair donation - Beautiful Lengths.
Locks of Love (LoL, for short) has a requirement of 10 inches, as does most other programs.  Pantene's required length is 8 inches.  LoL makes wigs for children, mostly children that suffer from conditions such as Alopecia Areata or burn victims and will not be able to grow hair again.  They do make a fair amount of wigs for children with cancer, but being that their hair will grow back eventually, they try to direct their focus on those who's hair will not.  LoL is a non-profit organization and they do sell some of their donations to help with overhead and other costs; they do not hide that fact.  Its hard to donate knowing my hair may not go to the cause I want it to.  They sell to wig makers and places of the sort and then they go through the hair and use what they can... etc.  There are a lot of websites out there trashing LoL because of how they operate.
I'm not sure how I feel about this, I'd rather donate my hair then have it be tossed in the garbage... but if they are just going to toss it then what is the point?

Pantene's program makes free wigs for women who have suffered from cancer.  I like the thought of that.

There are also lots of websites talking about selling your hair and donating the money.  Another interesting idea...  it's amazing how much people will pay for hair!  Some of the lots I looked at sold for over $1000.00 (a few for over $2K)!!!

I decided this weekend that my hair is bothering me.  If I don't wake up in the middle of the night with my hair strangling me, I wake up laying on it and when I go to move I pull it.  When you are more than half asleep pulling your own hair hurts!  I don't sleep with my hair up either for many reason.. so that is not an option.  There is just nothing to do with it anymore, it's too damn long!  I rarely use anything on my hair either; curling iron, straightener, product, etc.  I've also been seeing a lot of cute shorter hair styles on TV.. and it's got me thinking.
I always want my hair to be long again after I cut it, but I feel like if I were to do this for a good cause I wouldn't really have the right to bitch about it not being long.  Right?

I don't know what to do.  Anyone out there know someone who has donated?  Where did they donate and how was the experience?  Anyone have any other advice for me?

To cut or not to cut... to donate or to sell...

Ribs Have Muscles Too...

Ok, so here is my story (and yes, I'm sticking to it)

On Sunday night I had a friend over... I was giving him a hug and I felt like my back could crack, so I told him to squeeze and see if he could crack it. For those who don't know, I crack my back on the regular along with almost every other crackable part of my body. Back to the hug... he squeezes, there is a pop. I felt it in my ribs, but thought it was our ribs shifting against each other, on the outside... he thought he cracked my back (right?).
It didn't hurt right away, but I started to feel some pain by the time I went to bed. All day Monday at work it hurt bad, mostly when I would laugh or cough. I called the doctor to talk to someone about it... basically I didn't want to waste my time and money going there only to have them tell me there is nothing they can do for me; that is what they tell people with broken ribs, fractured ribs, bruised ribs, etc. Those things have to heal on their own, basically. So she tells me there a couple reasons to come in: a) to have it documented b) in case there is a break or fracture, they want to make sure it doesn't have potential to hurt or damage my lung - good enough reasons for me.
I figured I would wait it out another day, and make an appointment for after work Tuesday.

Tuesday morning I am getting ready for work and I coughed, all of the sudden there was this super intense SHARP pain in my ribs and it dropped me to the ground. I take a deep breath, get up and make my way to the bathroom to finish getting ready. As I'm in the bathroom, still a bit shook up from the pain, trying to put my hair up I start to get light headed. I've had experiences like this in the past; light headed, short of breath, weak - only a few times, all surrounded by the fact that I have a weak stomach.
This time was no different, all the symptoms are there... so I attempt to make my way to the couch to lay down, crawling because I'm too weak to walk, well I didn't make it to the couch and ended up laying on my floor trying to catch my breath. I finally make it to my bed and, still short of breath, call Jayne to tell her I wouldn't be car pooling and I wasn't sure if I'd make it to work at all as I was going to try and get in to be seen. She, obviously, understood.

Fast forward to my trip to the doctor - I have X-Rays taken and tell my stupid story to about 3 people. The doctor comes in after looking at the X-rays and tells me she didn't see any crack, fracture or break in any of my ribs but that the expert would take a look and may see something different.
So, what's wrong with me then?!
Because my vitals are normal and my lungs sound normal she thinks I pulled a Intercostal Muscle, which can hurt as bad as a broken rib and can take several weeks to heal! At least she doesn't think there is a break, which is good and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it holds true after hearing the second opinion.
My next question was what about the sharp pain this morning? She said that once a muscle is pulled it can spasm at any time without warning. The spasm can and most likely will return upon sneezing, coughing, and in my case most likely laughing also.
I've been instructed to take an anti-inflammatory twice a day and to try and take it easy for the next couple weeks.

ugh.

That's about all I've got for you today folks.

One last note, completely separate from my ribs, I have a friend who needs prayers. She just found out there is a malformation in her sons brain; they are not saying tumor or cancer... but she has to wait a month before he can be seen by a neurosurgeon - she and her son are amazing people who have been though a lot in their lives. Her name is Terri, she is the woman I knitted the pink bag for and she also walks the Breast Cancer 3-day in Phoenix. She is a great person and deserves only good thing to happen to her. She and Nate (her son) need your prayers. Please.
Ter, hang in there... keep your head up... you are loved and in the thoughts and prayers of many!

MN Vikings vs. Chicago Bears (@Chicago)

I'm gonna make this short and sweet... pretty much just rubbing it in.
On Saturday, October 13th I will wake up- drive to the city, do a short walk for Breast Cancer (here is the link if you want to donate to my cause: http://main.acsevents.org/goto/Ang88).  Once I finish my walk I will have to find something to do with myself for the next few hours before I board a plane to Chicago, IL.  I have tickets in transit via USPS for The Vikings @ The Bears game on Sunday, October 14th!  I have flights booked ($98 R/T!!), and a hotel is in the working....
Just wanted to rub it in... It's gonna be pretty dope- I've never been to Soldier Field!  Imagine the pictures I should have... if I'm sober enough to take them.

stuff

http://main.acsevents.org/goto/Ang88
check the link. I'm doing a walk in October "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer"
I know a lot of you were kind enough to support me in the past AIDS Walk I did; I am asking for your support again!! I have until October to collect donations, but I'm trying to get a head start!

On a separate note; no headaches for a week now!! well... kind of, I've found that wearing my hair up seems to cause a headache, which sucks because i am not ready to cut my hair and it's been too damn hot to wear it down! I had a margarita on Saturday and that seemed to give me a headache about a half hour after... that blows. i love me a nice salty margarita! So if i avoid drinking and wearing my head up... i'm fine. can you just picture my future...?

So that's really all I have to say today....

AIDS Walk 2007 Recap

So, I walked today! 6.2 miles in 1 hour and 55 minutes! GO ME!

I walked alone this year, so I was on my own schedule... the walk wasnt scheduled to start until noon, but I wanted to get it done and over with! I woke up, made myself a nice breakfast (nothing too filling) and got on my way.

I started walking at 9:40am, after checking in and getting my fancy new gym bag and a t-shirt AND and ballcap!
I have a bad knee... and of course it's been bothering me lately, with the trip to DC and walking so much there plus trying to prepare (physically) for this walk... well, I made sure I put on my brace this morning before I left and I was set!
So this morning was NOT warm... by any means. I guess I don't know the actual temp, but i'd guess high 40's.. MAYBE! Either way... walk I must, with my $805.00 being my swift kick in the ass when I needed it (and for those of you who are wondering... my ass isn't as sore as it was on Friday night!!), and boy... did I ever need that kick in the ass. Being that I was walking early, I was alone in every sense of the word... no other walkers in sight. I made the most of it, I started out at a real nice pace, fast enough to make it count, slow enough to not regret it.

The system they have set up is very nice; several rest stops with bathrooms, water, banana's, and all sorts of other goodies... plus pretty motivational people to keep you going! The first few stops were a piece of pie... once I made it to the 5th rest stop, I really needed the motivation... my left hamstring was starting to get crampy and my "GOOD" knee was starting to act up! Those people at the ING booth get all my praise for the day... they cheered for me and told me I could do it... only just over a mile left to go...
Obviously, since I am writing the blog, I made it. I think I made pretty good time too... being that I slowed way down once my leg started bothering me.. last year I think it took us 2.5 hours to finish. It's such a nice walk to take... I wish I lived closer; it'd be awesome to be able to do that more often... and I probably wouldnt be as sore in the end.

So, my feet are killing me, still (I've been done walking for approx 6 hours); I am very tired from getting up early, since I didn't get the best nights sleep last night; and all in all I am very proud of myself for doing the walk altogether!
Next year... more training.

Terri... I hope you train well for yours... I only walked 6.2 miles.... I can't imagine how you are going to feel after yours (and be sure to take the next 2 days off and pamper the hell out of yourself!!)!

Thanks again to those who love me enough to sponsor me! You guys are the best and I thought of each of you many many many MANY times today... your money kept me going!
Love to all of you...
Peace out!
